The story
Created in 1890s Germany by tax collector Louis Dobermann, who wanted a protective companion on his rounds, the Doberman became a refined guardian and working dog famous for loyalty and brains.
Training
Dobermans are among the most trainable breeds and need early socialisation and steady leadership. They thrive on training, work and close family time.
Grooming
The short, sleek coat needs only a weekly brush and the occasional bath. Grooming is very low effort.
Food & diet
Around 3 to 4 cups of quality food a day in two meals, matched to their activity.
Exercise
High. Daily vigorous exercise plus training or a job keeps them balanced and content.
Health to watch
Prone to dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious heart disease, plus von Willebrand disease and hip dysplasia. Health testing is vital.
Fun fact. The Doberman is one of the few breeds created by a single known person with a clear purpose in mind.
