The story
Descended from Roman war and guardian dogs, the Cane Corso worked Italian farms as a hunter, drover and protector. The name comes from a Latin root meaning guardian or bodyguard.
Training
The Corso is intelligent and eager to work but needs early, consistent socialisation and training from a confident owner to channel its guarding instinct safely.
Grooming
The short coat needs only a weekly brush and the occasional bath. Grooming is very low effort.
Food & diet
Around 4 to 6 cups of large-breed food a day, with controlled puppy growth to protect the joints.
Exercise
High. Daily exercise plus training and a sense of purpose keep the Corso balanced and calm.
Health to watch
Prone to hip dysplasia, bloat and some eye conditions. Health testing and careful feeding help.
Fun fact. The Cane Corso nearly died out in the mid-1900s and was revived by dedicated Italian enthusiasts in the 1970s.
